Our office is located in Berlin Adlershof, equipped with spacious laboratory facilities, and we are seeking a (Junior) Scientist (m/f/x) to join our applied microbiology group. In this role, you will contribute to the development of innovative and cost-efficient production processes, as well as microbial-based food ingredients and products. Your work will focus on translating scientific knowledge into practical applications, in close collaboration with our R&D team, partners, and under the guidance of our Senior Scientist. Ideally, you have experience in filamentous fungi physiology and biotechnology. We are eager to fill this position as soon as possible and look forward to your application.

Your Responsibilities

  • Plan, support, and execute applied microbiology and fermentation projects.
  • Contribute to scale-up initiatives and ensure seamless project progression.
  • Perform routine microbiological testing and validate methods for product analysis.
  • Collaborate with external stakeholders, including ingredient suppliers, research institutes, service providers, and potential customers, to achieve project goals.
  • Develop manuals and standard operating procedures (SOPs) for internal and external production processes.
  • Analyse, compile, summarize, and present experimental results in meetings, reports, and presentations.
  • Be open to travel, up to 10%.

Your Profile

  • PhD or MSc in Biology, Biotechnology, Food Science, Bio- or Chemical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Minimum 1 year (PhD) or 2 years (MSc) of experience in applied industrial microbiology.
  • Experience in filamentous fungi physiology, bioprocess design (e.g., fed-batch, continuous), and microbial cultivation (shake flasks to bench-scale bioreactors).
  • Proficient in fermentation data analysis, DoE, and statistical tools (e.g., JMP, Minitab, Simca).
  • Experience in wet chemistry, enzymatic tests, and maintaining online analytics (e.g., gas analysis, pH, dissolved oxygen).
  • Experienced with lab equipment, biological methods, and analytical techniques.
  • Familiar with Google and Microsoft suites, LIMS tools (e.g., Benchling), and statistical software.
  • Broad knowledge of different microbes is a plus.
  • Flexible, adaptable, and resilient.
  • Fluent in English; German proficiency is a bonus.

In this role you will play a crucial role in maintaining our commitment to excellence and continuous improvement in product testing and quality control processes. You will be reporting directly to our C-Level.

Your responsibilities will include: 

  • Leading communication with authorities, certification bodies, and customers on food safety and quality matters.
  • Developing and implementing tools (e.g., HACCP) and processes to ensure regulatory, customer, and internal food safety compliance.
  • Oversee quality assurance, monitor key metrics, and address deviations, complaints, and concerns related to food safety ensuring proactive measures are in place to mitigate any issues. 
  • Manage production partners, ensuring quality standards, tech transfers, equipment setup, and personnel training are in place.
  • Coordinate testing of raw materials, products, and environments while reviewing results and procedures.
  • Provide customer and internal support, including regulatory queries, new product launches, and food safety training.
  • Manage and update internal quality documents, ensuring all critical QMS documents are up to date.
  • Ensure the proper training and implementation of QHSE framework in our headquarter and production sites.
  • Coordinate internal and external audits as required.
  • Ensuring work safety, including coordination with the relevant authorities and implementation of internal safety measures.
  • Demonstrate a strong collaborative approach, ensuring effective communication and teamwork across departments.

What skills and experiences should you bring to the table?

Qualifications

  • Master’s/Bachelor’s degree in life sciences, food science, or related field with 3+ years of experience in quality assurance/food safety.
  • Expertise in HACCP processes, auditing, risk mitigation, and ensuring regulatory compliance in the food industry.
  • Strong project management skills with the ability to lead multiple projects, familiar with tools like Google Workspace, Slack, and Asana.
  • Knowledge of local and international quality standards (e.g., ISO 22000) and food product quality control.
  • Strong communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Bilingual proficiency in German and English, plus experience with CMOs and fermentation processes is a plus.

Your Responsibilities

  • Liquidity Management: Take full ownership of liquidity planning and cash flow management to ensure the financial health of the company.
  • FP&A and Controlling: Drive budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis processes, ensuring sound financial planning and monitoring.
  • Equity and Grant Fundraising: Support the CFO in raising equity and securing grants, playing a key role in shaping our funding strategy.
  • Debt Financing: Assist in evaluating and structuring debt financing options.
